Thad Juszczak: District surprise
Regarding the proposal to change voting districts for Wake County commissioners: I moved to Wake Forest a year ago, and I voted in the November 2014 elections. When I was researching the candidates, I noticed that the Wake County commissioner for my district was not on the ballot, so I stopped researching the candidates.
When I saw signs near my home for candidates from other districts, I assumed they were trying to influence their own district voters who might be driving in Wake Forest. So it was very surprising on Election Day to find that I was supposed to vote for candidates in the other Wake County districts. Do people in other N.C. House districts vote for the delegate candidates in my district? Do people in other N.C. Senate districts vote for the state Senate candidates in my district? Are there any other voting districts where Wake County’s strange approach is used? I have not encountered any. However, it appears to be a good way to dilute the influence of minority political groups.
