Michael J. Doran: Redistribution is theft

The plan to redistribute tax revenue from larger, better-off counties to less affluent counties is a blatant violation of the North Carolina Constitution because it will deprive taxpayers in the larger counties from enjoying the fruits of their own labors.

Article 1 Section 1 says that all people “are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, the enjoyment of the fruits of their own labor, and the pursuit of happiness.”

Why should I be forced to pay higher local taxes while my state taxes are drained off to another county? Why not require the counties that need more revenue to raise their own local taxes? This type of redistribution of tax money is nothing more than theft from one group that is perceived as well off so it can be handed out to a group that is viewed as less well off.
