Kari Summers: Year-round school lament

I just had my first experience with school assignment in the Wake County Public School System. I’m a big believer in year-round schools, even though many people still seem to prefer the traditional calendar.

I was excited that I was able to choose which calendar would work best for our family. I see now that it was not really a choice, but a chance, and luck was not on our side. We did not get our year-round choice, although we are on a waiting list.

This is not meant to be a complaint about WCPSS. It has a very tough, complex and likely thankless job of figuring out where it makes sense for all the kids to go to school while trying to keep the parents happy. I certainly do not envy it this task!

If so many people supposedly hate the year-round calendar, as we often hear and see in various ways, why did I (and every single one of my friends) not get into our year-round school?

I would say that we need to convert more elementary schools to the year-round calendar, but every time that is suggested, there is a huge uproar. I’m left scratching my head over this one.
