Christopher Dawson: Jumping to conclusions at Duke

Regarding the April 2 news article “Duke campus rallies after noose found”: While agreeing that the noose incident at Duke was an insensitive, despicable act, I am equally concerned about the reaction. Jumping to conclusions at my former campus without getting the facts seems commonplace (Duke lacrosse).

Why would one conclude it was racially motivated and a deed perpetrated by member(s) of the Duke community?

The Duke basketball team is in the Final Four. ESPN recently aired “I Hate Christian Laettner.” There are Kentucky and Michigan State fans in the area, as well as other “would-be local champions.”

Duke haters abound. Maybe a thoughtless, immature few decided to present 3-D graffiti hoping “Duke chokes.”

A learning experience: Perhaps analysis should sometimes precede reaction.
