Robert Y. George: Legislators don’t have a clue about higher education
I was told by then Chancellor Dr. William Wagoner at UNCW in 1972 when I was appointed as associate professor with a tenure-track appointment, “you are obligated to divide your time between teaching, research (or scholarship) and service to the academic and public community.
I am appalled today that some members of the North Carolina legislature, such as Sen. Tom McInnis, seem to lack a sense of what “higher education” is all about.
