Keith Pandres: Seniors deserve tax break

Shame on our state legislature! I did not understand how thoroughly the legislature failed our senior citizens until I filed my father’s taxes.

My 87-year-old father and 89-year-old mother have faced catastrophic medical expenses in recent years. In 2014 they had $130,000 of federally deductible medical expenses. Those deductions far outstrip their moderate retirement income, so of course they owe no federal taxes. North Carolina not only taxes them fully but also demands interest and penalties.

When I told my father, he just said, “Well, it’s not a big deal. ... I’m just going to run out of savings a little bit earlier than I thought.”

But I am completely outraged that our legislature does this to a man who worked for 50 years and always followed the rules. If anyone needs a tax break, it’s seniors and families facing catastrophic medical expenses.

How immoral it is to expect those poor people to pay taxes at the same rate as those of us still healthy and working.
