Robert Seymour: Ditching the disclaimer

Regarding the March 20 Point of View “What N.C. should take from Selma speech”: I am happy to see that the disclaimer attached to the column of Gene Nichol that he doesn’t speak for UNC-Chapel Hill no longer appears in The News & Observer. Instead, he is simply identified as “Gene R. Nichol, distinguished professor at UNC Chapel Hill.”

We should be proud that we have his articulate and timely voice in our university.

Robert Seymour

Chapel Hill

Editor’s note: The News & Observer includes the disclaimer “doesn’t speak for” only when writers request it. Such disclaimers are not an N&O policy in any way. Gene Nichol says he is no longer complying with UNC’s request that he say he doesn’t speak for the university, so he has not included a request for the disclaimer on his most recent submissions.
