Patrick O’Hearn: Abortion not about freedom, convenience
Lisa Levenstein’s April 8 Point of View “A GOP attack on health choices” misinterpreted true freedom in regards to abortion. Levenstein declared, “True freedom would mean the ability to make decisions about your own health in consultation with your doctor.”
The pro-choice idea of “freedom” has killed over 54 million babies in the United States since 1973. Tragically, many women are forced to have an abortion by their parents, boyfriend, partner, etc. What about the mother and baby’s freedom? What about their choice?
Levenstein further stated that Republicans don’t think about “men, women and children with basic needs, wants and dreams. They don’t see us as human beings.” In our society, many people have failed to recognize the most vulnerable human beings – those in the womb.
Mother Teresa once wrote, “It is a poverty to decide that a child must die so that you may live as you wish.” True freedom means doing what one ought to versus Levenstein’s belief of “terminating pregnancies to ensure our better lives for ourselves and our family,” i.e., mere convenience. After all, abortion isn’t a political or even a religious issue; it is a matter of life or death.
