Steve Bernholz: N.C. regression

Regarding Ned Barnett’s April 26 column “Of God and mammon in N.C.” concerning the Republican leadership’s putting aside religious “principles” for the sake of protecting “almighty dollar principles”: As always, Barnett calls it like it is.

Actually, this Republican-dominated legislature has reversed the progressive national reputation of North Carolina as the “Leader of the New South.” Almost every bill the lawmakers have passed has set us back in the eyes of numerous large corporations and professions. They have denied the threat of climate change and reduced environmental protections. They have transferred the state’s reasonable regulation of private businesses to self-regulation by these same businesses.

Finally, and probably most important, is their alteration of our time-honored electoral process in order for them to remain in control. How very sad.
