Cheryl Mensch: Contradictory abortion plan
Regarding the April 24 news article “Split House approves longer abortion wait”: I liken it to this scenario: Someone makes a decision to have major surgery and checks in at the hospital. Soon her doctor comes into her room to prepare her for the procedure by going through a step-by-step explanation, complete with pictures. After the talk, he tells her that she must wait 72 hours in order to decide if she still wants to go through with it.
If like me, she has already considered the pros and cons and wants to get the surgery over with as soon as possible. Those, like Rep. Jacqueline Schaffer, who want to subject women seeking abortions to graphic details and further waiting, are lacking in common sense and compassion.
The woman has already made the decision because she believes that the risk of having a child she cannot support poses greater risks to both the child and herself than ending the pregnancy with a legal abortion.
Since the GOP-led legislature wants to cut state and federal spending for welfare, it seems contradictory to promote the births of children who will need those services and support.
