Fillmore Bowen: Cutting, raising other taxes
Regarding the May 7 news brief “Property-tax increase proposed for Cary”: I appreciated your pointing out one of the key reasons for the needed increase was due to the fact that the North Carolina General Assembly passed a bill that beginning in fiscal year 2016 would cause the town to lose the authority to levy and set rates for business privilege license taxes, which cut several million dollars out the the town’s budget.
How does our legislature expect towns in North Carolina to meet the needs of residents without needed funding? I guess as long as the legislators can claim they are cutting taxes, if a town has to raise property taxes to compensate for the lost revenue, it is the town’s problem.
