Jerry VanSant: Appalling gun bill

The N.C. House is considering legislation (HB 562) that would, among other things, facilitate unfettered access to guns by criminals and the mentally ill (by ending our successful state permitting system) and prohibit doctors from discussing home gun safety with their patients.

Empirical evidence from other states indicates that this legislation would lead to a significant increase in gun deaths. Let us hope that Republicansfor once put the safety and well-being of the residents of North Carolina ahead of their bizarre and extreme ideological loyalties.

This appalling legislation should be soundly defeated, and those who have brought it forward should be embarrassed.
