Virgil Early: God talk among us

Regarding the May 17 Point of View “Thwarting the theocrats”: Thanks to Lewis Beale for his timely shout-out about the growing danger of theocracy in America. And the tip-off is God talk from GOP hopefuls. Who knew?

But, come to think of it, much God talk is attributed to George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Guess we were blessed (read: lucky) that they both were distracted, otherwise we might be Iran already.

And John Kennedy. We were really concerned that he would turn out to be a shill for the pope. Didn’t have time, I guess.

And, gosh, Jimmy Carter, the all-time in-your-face Christian. What if he had been re-elected with time to do some real mischief? Scary!

And I was thinking that it was the nonreligious who are coercive: Those who breach the politically correct dogma and are fired from their jobs (president of Harvard) or denied promotion (UNC-Wilmington professor) or sent home from elementary school for saying a silent prayer at her desk (several).

Well, now I know better. Thanks again.
