Karyn Joyner: Teaching outside the box

Regarding the May 24 column “Hating school, loving teaching”: What a wonderful piece Steven Unruhe wrote about his love of teaching!

I also loved teaching at Myrtle Beach High School as an 11th- and 12th-grade English teacher. I hope I was almost as innovative as he has been.

To learn, students’ minds must be caught, which textbooks rarely accomplish. I loved his playing the Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” as he returned the students’ tests to them. My son idolized the Stones’ music.

Unruhe is my kind of teacher. The classroom will miss him as will all the future students who might have been “turned on” by Unruhe’s unconventional approach.

I hope his article stimulated many teachers and caused today’s students to consider the teaching profession. It can be a great career if they have an unconventional streak in them.
