Susan Higginbotham: Theocracy reigns

Regarding the June 12 news article “N.C. officials now free to avoid gay marriages”: Now that magistrates and registers of deeds employees have been allowed to refuse to marry or to issue marriage licenses to gay couples (or to any couple who offends their religious sensibilities, no matter how hateful or arcane), what is next on the religious right’s shopping list?

A law allowing register of deeds employees to refuse to record deeds issued to those couples as tenants by the entireties (a form of ownership restricted to married couples)?

A law allowing social services workers to refuse to assist unmarried mothers and their illegitimate children?

A law allowing assistant district attorneys to refuse to prosecute cases of marital rape?

In the new theocracy which was once North Carolina, the possibilities seem endless.
