Paul W. Thayer: UNC BOG needs a plan

Reading the May 21 news article “UNC search panel debates how to identify next leader” on the UNC Board of Governors meeting with search consultants reminded me of the Keystone Kops. Incredible!

They fire an accomplished president without explanation, other than to say they want change, but have yet to think through the sort of change desired.

As they start the search for a new president, they still don’t know what they want.

Those members who are graduates of the UNC system might pause and think of some of the mind-expanding experiences they had as undergraduates. Would they deny such experiences to present and future students?

Please get the steps into the proper sequence. No more: Ready! Fire! Aim! A lot of people will be hurt otherwise.

Paul W. Thayer

Emeritus Professor of Psychology, NCSU
