Jennifer Flowers: We’re all the same

Her name was Linda. We handed tobacco to our mothers. Our mothers were loopers. We were the same.

And when break time came, Linda and I went behind the barn and ate a Moon Pie and drank a TrueAde soda. And we talked. Linda became my friend.

But when we went back to work and would take a drink of water from the pails, they were labeled “Black” and “White.” The dippers looked the same. The water was the same. Our jobs were the same. And Linda was my friend.

It was the first time in my life that I realized there was a difference.

I hope Linda, wherever she is, knows that we are still the same ... and I still love Moon Pies!
