Jim Nolan: GA not representing majority

The people of North Carolina need to vote more often and for those who actually represent their ideals.

It was not until a statewide referendum did voters get to the polls and overwhelmingly approve the “liquor by the drink” proposition. The General Assembly fought tooth and nail against allowing the voters the opportunity to address the subject at the polls because all their constituents, they felt, were against liquor because it was sinful.

Well, approximately 74 percent voted for restaurants and bars to have the right to serve mixed drinks, demonstrating how out of touch the politicians actually were.

Then with a 35 percent voter turnout in 2012, the church folks passed a constitutional amendment declaring marriage a union between a man and a woman.

We now know that even the conservative Supreme Court believes that vote to be unconstitutional. Once again our lawyers in our General Assembly put forth an amendment that has proved to be unconstitutional.

Do these people know the law or what the people actually want? We do not have a democracy if the majority opinions are not voiced.
