Harold Taylor: Presidents owned slaves
Regarding J. Peder Zane’s July 1 column “As a testament to mercy, take it down”: You gave Zane a third of a page to tear down the monument in Raleigh for the 40,000 North Carolina dead during the Civil War and only a few were slave owners. Why doesn’t Zane have the Washington monument and the Thomas Jefferson memorial taken down because the honored were slave owners?
I am a World War II veteran of the greatest generation, but I am not too happy with many members of the current generations.
