Marvin Woll: Keep REPS

In regard to the June 17 Point of View “Counting costs of renewable energy rules”: The writer mentioned many negative statistics about our Renewable Energy Portfolio Standards law but failed to mention the great positive effect it has had on North Carolina.

The solar industry has created thousands of jobs in North Carolina. Many people have installed solar on their homes where it lowers their electric bills. And the excess power they get can be sold back to the utilities and allows them not to have to build new power plants.

Solar is clean, and wind is clean. Natural gas still pours carbon into our atmosphere, which increases the problems we are having with climate change.

Of course I’m sure the writer denies there is any problem with climate change and doesn’t read or hear about the terrible drought in California and the record rainfall in Texas.

The writer concluded by saying, “Who could object to such a responsible pause?” I strongly object to such a pause and so do 86 percent of the people in North Carolina who support solar. We need to increase the jobs and energy that solar provides and not do anything to change this important legislation.
