Buddy Owens: No public funds for private schools

In response to the July 13 letter “Scholarship program beneficial” and the June 27 editorial “Voucher mess”: The N.C. “Opportunity Scholarship Program,” a private school voucher program to be paid for by taxpayer money, is against everything American!

In this great country everyone has the right to send their children to a free publicly funded school but no one has the right to have public funds pay for their choice of private schools. The vast majority of private schools are religious schools.

The North Carolina Constitution and the U.S. Constitution both prohibit government funds from being used to support religious institutions. The U.S. Supreme Court has already ruled against this many times.

Shame upon the N.C. legislature for deliberately attempting to violate both of our constitutions.
