David L. Therit: Conservatives are following Jesus

In the July 10 Point of View “Uncompelling ‘biblical marriage’,” the writer made the statement that Jesus was “not a fan of marriage.” Not so!

In Matthew 19:4-8, Jesus had the perfect opportunity to devalue the importance and meaning of marriage had he seen fit. Instead, he supported it as a relationship established by God.

It should be pointed out from the verses in Matthew 19 that Jesus not only showed his support for marriage, but he also presented to his hearers the definition of marriage: one man and one woman becoming one flesh before God.

I would like to answer the writer’s closing question in the article regarding conservatives’ take on marriage. Her question was, “Why don’t these Christians just follow Jesus?” Excuse me, but I think they are.
