Douglas Melton: GOP nailing it
Each day, when I receive my newspaper, I turn to the People’s Forum first. And, each week, I see more readers complaining about some issue with our Republican legislators. There seems to be a new issue every week: attacks on voters rights, initial leniency shown to the Duke Energy coal-ash spills, refusal to subsidize clean-energy programs, the tax shift to the poor and elderly, cuts to education, ag-gag ruling, ruling to concealed weapons law. Notice I didn’t even include Medicaid extension.
Needless to say, the public gets more and more unhappy with the nonsense legislation that lawmakers put in place. I’ll borrow a line from the Mel Gibson movie, “The Edge of Tomorrow,” where Mel is dressing down a senator. Come the 2016 general election, voters are going to need to decide “whether to side with the ones being nailed to the cross, or the ones banging in the nails.” It’s quite obvious where our legislators stand.
