Lynda Seward: Is ‘Tar heel’ derogatory?

Will the term “tar heel,” which became prominent during the Civil War, now be considered derogatory?

Since there are demands to remove Civil War monuments and statues, just wondering what North Carolinians and UNC students will rename themselves.

I am sure the Wolfpack and Duke fans have some suggestions.
