Reed Elliott: Lose the Confederate license plates

As a Southerner by choice and not birth, I’d like to express my admiration for the bravery and courage of our fellow residents and legislators in South Carolina. I can understand the fear of some that taking down the Confederate Army battle flag from the statehouse might smack of dishonoring those who fought under it.

Have no fear. The bravery, fortitude and brilliance of Southern troops were and are legendary. They reflect honor on all Americans. The people of South Carolina rightly understand that no flag can add luster to their memory or their glory. It is their actions as soldiers that deserve honor and remembrance, not the flag.

Now it’s time for North Carolina to follow where our neighbors have led. Let us act promptly to remove the Confederate Army battle flag emblem from our license plates. Those who wish to purchase such a plate from after-market vendors are free to do so, but our state government belongs to all the people.
