Charles Harner: Can feds ‘play’ with states?

Regarding the July 23 editorial “A monument to big government”: You quoted Rep. George Cleveland as saying, “Municipalities and cities are subdivisions of the state, and the state can play with their property if they feel like it.”

By the exact same reasoning, we could say, “States are subdivisions of the nation, and the federal government can play with their property if they feel like it.”

So does Cleveland claim the federal government can force North Carolina to remove monuments it doesn’t like? Or tear down the Capitol?
