Gina Kentopp: Trails need bike lanes
I completely agree with the July 17 letter “High-speed cyclists a hazard” about cyclists on the Neuse River Trail.
I walk the trail fairly regularly and have gotten to the point that I wince when I see families with small children who are just learning to ride a bike, toddlers just beginning to walk or even puppies who are just learning to walk on a leash.
I have even cautioned families with small children that the bikes come around those corners extremely fast, and it’s just a disaster waiting to happen.
I also am not opposed to cycling on the trail but the 10-mph speed limit should be followed and enforced.
There are times I have avoided the trail, in spite of its beauty, because it causes stress to be constantly on the lookout for these cyclists. I think that either they should start monitoring the speed limits or a bike lane should be added so that walkers and families can enjoy the trail as well.
