Jay Singleton: Protecting profits instead of people
The July 22 head-to-head opinion pieces (“Lowering costs through competition” and “Jeopardizing our communities”) concerning North Carolina’s Certificate of Need laws may give some the impression that this is a battle to the death between doctors and hospitals.
In reality, what is at stake is the cost of health care for people who pay for their own health insurance. No one disputes the fact that privately insured people pay more because of these outdated regulations.
The choice legislators have this year is simple: Protect those who profit from these rules or help working families who are desperately in need of relief from rising health care costs.
