Fred Howes: A hurtful voucher decision
The school voucher has been upheld by our Supreme Court, but I believe this is just another decision that hurts our public school system.
It is good that parents are involved and have choice in their children’s education. It is wrong, however, to take monies away from public education to give to private schools that do not have to have the same standards.
We must remember that when private companies are involved, profit is always the motive, and that may not always be in the best interest of our children.
The concept of the separation of church and state cannot be denied, and religious instruction has no place in public education unless it is a study of all religions, not just Christianity.
I believe in Christianity and have all my life, but the place for its instruction and its beliefs is at home and places of worship, not in the private and religious schools.
