Hylton Lawrence: The DHHS dance
Regarding the Aug. 6 news article “DHHS Secretary Wos resigns; Gov. McCrory appoints new leader”: Well, the shuffle continues at DHSS. First, we have a doctor with no experience in managing 17,000 employees. Numerous foulups. Apparently you don’t have to do much to get the Long Leaf Pine Award.
Now Gov. Pat McCrory is bringing in a guy with no experience in Medicaid or management except for the last company he tried to run that was in bankruptcy. Hard to believe we can’t hire someone qualified to run this department. I don’t think you will get anyone for $140,000 a year to do the job. At Duracell/Gillette Co., where I worked in sales and marketing for over 30 years, we had a rule to go by. Good managers surround themselves with good employees.
I suggest bumping the pay up to at least $300,000 a year with a five-year contract and get a qualified person to run DHHS.
