In the Aug. 14 Under the Dome article “Bill: Unemployed should look harder,” Rep. Marilyn Avila, a Republican from Raleigh, implied that those who have a hard time looking for five employment contacts a week may find it difficult to show up for work.
I tried to confirm her hypothesis using relevant factual information regarding unemployment and jobs seekers. To that end, I decided to look on the Employment Security Commission website and, much to my surprise, I found that in order for these individuals to receive unemployment insurance, they had to have lost a job through no fault of their own!
Not only that, these individuals had to have a certain level of wages over the last 12 months. This means that those who are now looking for work once were able to find work and even did work!
This could even mean that these unemployed individuals are hard-working people going through a difficult time. Just like me, they could even be paying bills!
I quickly decided to write Avila and let her know about this information. I hope she is as excited as I am!
