Kristie Ballard: Eye-opening sermon

Regarding Burgetta Eplin Wheeler’s Aug. 14 column “Hold a hand, share a meal, grow your world”: I work for a local affiliate of a well-known national nonprofit. It is so hard to effect change when your community doesn’t understand that there is a problem to be solved, needs to be met. When there is an ever-pervasive attitude of “I’ve worked hard for what I have – Why can’t those people just work harder, move to a better house, manage their money better, etc., etc.?” – the job is so much harder.

This column is a brilliant revelation to anyone who will take a moment to seriously contemplate whether they have ever made blanket assumptions about a group of people. Thank you for the eye-opening scenarios. The column preached to me today.
