Thomas McKee: Education by ALEC

It would be difficult to find fault with the concise education mission statement in the Sept. 1 letter “Education’s purpose clear.”

However, the letter-writer’s belief that the N.C. General Assembly (GOP) legislators have not “intentionally targeted public education” is a very forgiving one.

The Republican disdain for teachers and GOP efforts, guided by the American Legislative Exchange Council, to privatize education are well-known.

It seems that the ALEC/GOP education philosophy is succinctly: Academies for rich kids, charters or home-schooling for middle-class kids and defunded public schools for poor kids.

Many of the recent actions of the NCGA fit this philosophy perfectly.
