Cynthia Hamilton: Saunders shows no respect for Christians

How much of Barry Saunders’ shameless, anti-Christian bigotry will you continue to print? His Aug. 25 column “But Duke, I may not agree!” about Duke University’s required freshman reading was deplorable. If Saunders were as disrespectful of the Quran as he is of the Bible (of which he is plainly ignorant), the Muslim community would be rioting in the streets.

Does Saunders also hate Buddhists, Jews and Hindus? Is anything at all sacred to him? He seems to think it’s acceptable to publicly mock the faith of billions of Christians who abide by the truths of the Bible.

Saunders’ rabid intolerance is part of the problem in America. He lacks decorum and diplomacy. He is a promoter of uncivil discourse, when our nation is in desperate need of civility.

For a prestigious academic institution like Duke to choose a comic book as its required reading for incoming freshmen seems asinine, when there is a sea of lofty classical literature and noble nonfiction that would better inspire 18-year-olds as they begin their college studies. Is a comic book the best Duke can do?
