M.E. Revord: New age surrogate term
I was reading the Aug. 29 People item “Lucy Liu shares baby news” and stopped mid-story when I read that her son was “brought into the world via gestational carrier.” Gestational carrier?
I have heard of “car carriers,” but to term the nine months of gestation in a mother’s womb as a mere means of “carrying” a child to term denigrates the amazing process of life.
Granted Liu meant “via surrogacy” in her Twitter account, but to use such verbiage as “gestational carrier” objectifies the birth mother and downplays the miracle of pregnancy and new life.
