David Black: Unneeded lawmakers
Regarding the Sept. 2 Point of View “The case for a full-time legislature”: Recent speculation about whether North Carolina needs a full-time legislature was asking the wrong question. Why do we need the legislature that we have?
Given that most bills are written in secret by the leadership and then trotted out for the majority to rubber stamp, mostly unread, why should taxpayers be supporting such a large legislative body?
Perhaps 10 members in each house would be sufficient to do the actual legislating. The state would be spared the cost of the current bloated legislature and the embarrassment of a failed democracy.
The emptied space in the legislative building could be leased out to corporations, thus reducing their costs for lobbying.
