Sarah Brandon: A positive police story

Regarding the Sept. 17 Josh Shaffer column “Raleigh cop, his attacker go viral on Facebook”: A story unfolded that could bring about a change in perspective in our society.

I applaud Raleigh police officer J.D. Boyd for his willingness to forgive and for his overall compassion for the community. He seems to want to really help people through doing his job and not just to punish them.

I also applaud Cory Sanders for not holding a grudge against the officer who placed him under arrest. Instead of letting the incident make him bitter and turn him against authority figures, he used the experience to turn his life around and perhaps will pass his view of situations like this on to his own son.

Despite the negativity placed on police officers in society recently through media and other outlets, this story was exactly what the community needed to see to start putting trust back in our officers. I hope to see more stories like this.
