Louise Taylor: Lawmakers for sale

In the Sept. 26 column “Privatizing Medicaid means ignoring their own expert,” Chris Fitzsimon argued persuasively that State Rep. Nelson Dollar knows what he is talking about when Dollar points out that privatizing the management of Medicaid will not save the state money, will cut or reduce services for those who need them and will only enrich “out-of-state for-profit managed-care companies.”

Why would Republicans in the General Assembly ignore their well-informed colleague? Perhaps for the same reason that these same legislators are trying to set up pay-to-play fundraising committees in the legislature, committees that can accept campaign contributions while the General Assembly is in session (“Concern sparked on political accounts,” Sept. 26 news article).

In the 1930s, Cole Porter wrote a haunting song about prostitution called “Love for Sale.” A 2015 update of that song might be called “Lawmakers for Sale.”
