William E. Jackson Jr.: Biden must run
Regarding the Aug. 30 column “Sleepy race needs a cup of Joe”: Ned Barnett’s prescient column noted the unraveling of the aura of inevitability surrounding Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.
We have a vice president who has been centrally involved in making major governmental decisions since 2009. More to the point, Joe Biden’s long Senate experience and personal temperament are ideally suited to break out of the deadlock of our democracy in recent years and to restore the art of compromise between the White House and Congress.
In a recent CBS interview with Stephen Colbert, Biden was asked whether he is considering a run for the presidential nomination. He replied: “I’d be lying if I said that I knew I was there,” revealing the emotional pain of recovering from the premature death of his son.
I have known Biden since his early Senate days and was active in his first presidential campaign. My concern is that he will wait too long to make the decision to run, when time is money and organization in launching a long campaign for the highest office.
Soon there must be a “there” there. His example of service and suffering have prepared him superbly. Run, Joe, run!
