Bill Barnard: Raptors and rail
I don’t really know how Paul Stam was elected if his quote in the Sept. 22 Road Worrier column “Republican legislators defend the budget’s light-rail killer” was correct: “Light rail is sort of a dinosaur of the 20th century or the 19th century.” Perhaps he was referring to himself and not the least expensive and minimal pollution mode of transportation we have.
We should all gather enough money to build light rail as fast as we can. Property values are only increasing, and the longer we wait, the higher the cost for the inevitable means of solving our transportation problems. Wouldn’t it be nice to take a train from Raleigh to Durham or Chapel Hill to watch a game or show and not have to worry about the parking? It would be great to go from any of the Triangle cities to RDU in a matter of minutes and be dropped off right at the entrance.
Stam wants to keep us in the dark ages. Do you want to stay there?
