Mack Paul: Mixed use vs. sprawl
A comment in the Oct. 8 editorial “Staying Raleigh’s course” deserves clarification. The editorial stated that developers are driving the transition to a new zoning code based on their preference for “mixed use” structures.
In reality, the new zoning code reflects the culmination of many years of hard work by smart growth advocates, planners and neighborhood activists.
The shift away from sprawl to mixed use, walkable communities has been economically painful for many in the real estate industry.
Implying that one stakeholder gains from the new code diminishes the efforts of others.
