David N. Camaione: Guns destroying U.S.

Why is it so difficult to have a discussion on the merits of gun safety? Are the avid supporters of the Second Amendment so frightened that they believe government will have door-to-door confiscation of guns? Their paranoia sees black helicopters hovering over their homes with fear taking the place of common sense.

A terrorist was arrested for wearing a shoe bomb on a plane, and now everyone takes shoes off before boarding. One needs a license, insurance and must buckle up to drive a car, but a gun can be obtained without a universal background check. How sad is that?

Even those with mental illnesses have no difficulty purchasing a gun. They legally purchase their weapons and commit mass murder over and over again. And we won’t even have a discussion to come up with common-sense solutions. How disheartening.

The hardliners are so entrenched with protecting the Second Amendment that they are willing to destroy our country. They are unwilling to entertain any rule on gun safety when nearly every other civilized country has one. Compare their death statistics to gun violence with ours. Guess who wins – not us!

We must have a serious discussion on gun safety; we are tearing this country apart.
