Jeanne Yocum: Fire General Assembly

Regarding the Oct. 4 news article “Last-minute rush prompts criticism”: The ludicrous way laws were passed during the last few days of this legislative session is only one more reason why this legislature deserves a failing grade for its performance this year.

Its chief duty was to pass a budget, which it delivered months late after negotiations were conducted behind closed doors by a chosen few. Even members of the legislature were left in the dark, never mind the residents of North Carolina.

The lawmakers spent considerable time focusing on social issues that may concern them but do not concern the people they were elected to serve.

If those working in the private sector performed their jobs so poorly, they would be out of a job very quickly. And yet somehow these incompetents are re-elected time and again, largely thanks to the gerrymandered districts they have put in place.
