Heather Travar: Principled voters needed, too

Now that it’s been a few days since the Democratic debate, I have had a chance to see multiple people comment on how Bernie Sanders gave Hillary Clinton a gift with his comment about her emails.

I am more disappointed in us as a society than our leaders. The people who say this do so because they think like our politicians.

So let me explain it: Sanders speaks out of principle. He would not lie and say he thought the emails were a big deal if, in fact, he didn’t. He would also not divert our nation’s attention from real issues just to score a few political points.

We don’t just need a new type of politician – we need a new type of voter. We have to be as principled in our thoughts and actions as we would like our elected leaders to be.

The fact that people think Sanders did something wrong in the debate with his email comment shows how truly broken our country is today.
