Evelyn Barrett: Worthwhile series

We owe a great debt of gratitude to Mandy Locke for her diligence in investigating all the labor issues she has pursued for the past three years.

The most egregious of these acts by unconscionable employers was against the workers providing care for mentally and physically disabled adults. How many of us are willing to do this job? It is a low-paying, difficult job requiring odd hours and much dedication to the patients, in which the employees generally receive very little appreciation for their work.

It would seem that a government organization claiming to protect laborers would make every effort to see that these employees get their due pay. Instead, they give up, easily it seems, and tell minimum-wage workers to take their cases to court. Unbelievable!

I hope Locke’s series results in every unpaid or underpaid worker in these group homes receiving their due wages before they all have to move in with relatives and default on their bills.
