James P. Davidson: Berry should resign

Regarding the Oct. 11 news article “Berry to workers: ‘No further action’ ”: The act of a formal swearing-in puts words and commitments before God as well as man. It invokes The Almighty.

Section 7 of Article VI of the North Carolina Constitution provides the format for the oaths of office.

For Commissioner of Labor Cherie Berry, she would have had to put her hand on the Holy Bible and say: “I, Cherie Berry, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and maintain the Constitution and laws of the United States, and the Constitution and laws of North Carolina not inconsistent therewith, and that I will faithfully discharge the duties of my office as Commissioner of Labor, so help me God.”

Clearly, she has not faithfully discharged her duties as commissioner of labor. Now is the time for her to go.

As a registered voter, and lifelong resident of the state of North Carolina, and on behalf of the good people of the state of North Carolina, I hereby accept her resignation, which, if she had an ounce of honesty in self-examination, and contrition, would be forthcoming immediately.
