George William Warren IV: Troopers to the rescue
On her way home to Virginia recently, my daughter was involved in a motor vehicle accident in Raleigh. The collision occurred on Wade Avenue, in heavy, stop-and-go traffic. Alone and unfamiliar with the area, she was extremely distraught and panicky.
Moments later, as if from nowhere, three North Carolina state troopers appeared and took the situation in hand. Her car was massively damaged and blocking traffic. These three heroes muscled her car to a safe place on the shoulder and directed traffic until a Raleigh officer could get to the scene. Meanwhile, they consoled my daughter, even giving her a big hug, which calmed her down until her equally distraught father (me) could get to her.
Who were these knights in Smokey-the-Bear hats? Well, merely the commander of the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Col. William J. Grey, Deputy Commander Lt. Col. Billy Clayton and Lt. Col. Bobby West. I haven’t seen so much brass since my Army days.
These are guys with a lot of important responsibilities, who could have just left everything to the Raleigh Police Department. Instead, they dropped what they were doing and took care of my daughter. For that, her mother and I will be eternally grateful.
