Barb Goldstein: ‘Research leave’?
Regarding the Oct. 24 news article “UNC’s next chief ready for challenge”: Margaret Spellings has been selected as the new leader of the UNC system with a base salary of $775,000 plus various bonuses and compensations. That figure in itself is mind-boggling.
What is more astounding is that if her five-year contract is not renewed, she will receive a full salary, one-year research leave. Among her initial statements, Spellings has stated, “I’m not a researcher.” So how does that “research leave” work?
