Doug Sedlak: Spellings has credentials

In the Oct. 25 editorial “Serve UNC, not politics” about UNC President-elect Margaret Spellings, The N&O editorial board magnanimously stated, “She deserves not just the benefit of the doubt, but the support of those within and without the university system’s community.”

Later, however, you stated, “Spellings has a big job. She won it on her political rather than her educational credentials.”

Spellings is a former U.S. Secretary of Education. One must ask, then, what educational credentials would she need to have won the job on her educational rather than her political credentials? And ask, too, is that statement at odds with the earlier magnanimous declaration of support?
