Steve Toler: Spellings has work to do
Your Oct. 28 editorial “Ross sets example” and Rob Christensen’s Oct. 28 column “Spellings joins a diverse club” brought to mind that the keys to Margaret Spellings’ success will be measured by her character and her laser focus on making the UNC system great and enhancing its integrity.
If she can combine the character shown by Tom Ross with the character and laser focus on integrity shown by Bill Friday, she’ll be among the great leaders of UNC.
She comes to us with some political baggage, some good policy experience and a light resumé of leading advanced educational institutions.
Her first 100 days will be critical to her success: leading by example – overcoming the political baggage by keeping the politics to herself, enhancing the integrity of UNC and seeking great role models in advanced educational institutions to help her learn to lead UNC.
Our prayer should be that she becomes the great leader UNC deserves.
